Beaches of the Eastern Algarve
The eastern Algarve is home to some of Portugal's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. Protected by the Ria Formosa Natural Park, these stretches of golden sand offer a more relaxed alternative to the busier western Algarve. Here's your guide to the best beaches near Tavira.
Ilha de Tavira
This is the star of the region. Stretching 11 kilometres of pure sand within the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, Ilha de Tavira consistently ranks among the Algarve's finest beaches. On a sunny day, you might think you've landed in the Caribbean.
Beyond the beach, the island is excellent for walking year-round, with dunes and pine forests full of wildlife.
How to get there: Take a short ferry from Quatro Águas pier (a few kilometres from Tavira). Free parking available at the terminal. From June to mid-September, ferries also depart from Tavira centre. Water taxis offer a more flexible (but pricier) option.

Praia do Barril
A slightly wilder beach on the western end of Ilha de Tavira, facing the village of Santa Luzia. The lack of high cliffs or dunes means it's more exposed to the wind, but that adds to its untamed charm.
The highlight here is the Anchor Cemetery — hundreds of rusted anchors arranged in rows among the dunes, a haunting memorial to the region's historic tuna fishing industry. It gives Praia do Barril a unique cultural identity you won't find elsewhere.
How to get there: Walk across the footbridge from the mainland or take the small tourist train from Pedras d'El Rei resort (seasonal). Good facilities including drinking water and lifeguards in summer.
Cabanas
Facing the charming fishing village of Cabanas, this beach sits on a barrier island with calm, sheltered waters. It's ideal for peaceful walks and has quieter stretches if you want to escape the crowds.
The village itself is a delight — watch boats bobbing in the Ria Formosa from the promenade, then hop on a quick boat ride to the beach. Cabanas is also famous for its seafood restaurants serving fresh oysters, clams, and octopus.
Facilities: Restaurant, toilets, lifeguards in summer.
Fábrica / Cacela Velha
This is for those who love unspoiled nature. Modest, tranquil, and stunningly beautiful, the beach near Cacela Velha feels like a secret. As you approach by boat, you'll spot crabs, fish, and herons seemingly unbothered by passing vessels.
Access starts from a lagoon behind the sand strip — take a boat from Sítio da Fábrica near the village. You can also walk from Manta Rota, though it's a long beach trek.
Important: No cafés, lifeguards, or toilets here. Bring everything you need and enjoy the peace.
Praia Verde
One of the most exclusive beach destinations in the region. Praia Verde has luxury villas, upscale restaurants, and a famous nightclub nearby. Beach services are top-notch — rent a sunbed and umbrella while drinks and snacks are brought to you.
Parking tip: Limited free parking exists, but there's paid parking near Restaurante O Infante at reasonable rates. The area is frequently patrolled by GNR (police), so use authorised parking to avoid fines.
Altura
Located in Castro Marim municipality, Altura stands out for its excellent water quality and pleasant temperature. It's well-equipped for beach sports — football, volleyball, and nearby areas for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
The beach has two car parks and four access points, three with elevated walkways that protect the dune ecosystem. A great choice for both sports enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxed day by the sea.
Manta Rota
A family favourite. Near the Ria Formosa, this beach offers generous space even in peak season. Low dunes create a feeling of openness, and the water tends to be warmer than other Algarve spots.
Manta Rota has everything families need: lifeguards, beachfront restaurants, shops, showers, and toilets. Perfect for a relaxed, full day at the beach.
Ilha da Armona
Part of the enchanting barrier island group (with Culatra and Farol) within the Ria Formosa lagoon system. This archipelago stretches about 50 km from Faro to the Spanish border — one of the Algarve's greatest natural treasures.
How to get there: Ferry from Olhão (main fishing port east of Faro). The journey takes about 30 minutes, with departures every 15 minutes in summer. From the landing point, it's just a 15-minute walk to the beach, which extends for kilometres in both directions.
Lifeguards patrol the busiest areas in summer. Ideal for long seaside walks along the dunes.
Ilha do Farol
One of the Algarve's most picturesque destinations, accessible only by boat from Faro or Olhão. The 35-minute journey crosses the beautiful Ria Formosa — an experience in itself.
Located at Portugal's southern tip, Farol beach is known for crystal-clear, clean waters. While the sand strip isn't wide, there's always enough space. Beyond the beach, explore beachfront bars and the famous Bar Farol, perfect for longer walks while watching fishermen and divers at work.
Tip: Arrive early and park near the port. Visiting Ilha do Farol is more than a beach day — it's a memorable blend of nature, gastronomy, and relaxation.
